Scouting Report: Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama

NFL Draft Analyst
Terrence Cody

Ht: 6'5 Wt: 365 40: 5.20

Strengths: Amazing size. Great ability against double team (he is consistently double-teamed). Uses hands very well and shows ability to shed blockers fairly easy. Shows good initial quickness off the snap; however, lacks the overall speed to get after the quarterback. Displays amazing strength, and can be very disruptive at times. Seems to always be at the right place at the right time; he's a playmaker. He is very good against the run, and flashes dominance at times. He is the ideal run-stuffer. Often takes 2 or 3 blockers to move him; which clogs up the whole line. Tackling ability is 2nd to none; once he gets a hold of the ball-carrier he doesn't get away. He has decent footwork and has a good stance. Keeps feet moving while engaged with lineman. Average awareness. Shows truly amazing potential.

Weaknesses: Almost too big and some are concerned it could affect long-term health. Not very versatile; strict nose tackle. Sluggish at times and has been known to take off plays. Has a poor motor and can be visibly tired at times. Some see him as a strict 2 down lineman in the NFL. Not a pass rusher. Minor injury concerns.

Summary: Terrence Cody has received a lot of attention this season; and rightfully so. Alabama had an unforgettable year and Cody has played exceptionally well. Nose tackles that are the size of Cody simply don't come around every year. He has unbelievable strength (which is key for nose tackles). He uses his hands very well and has ability to shed blockers. Cody throughout the season has flashed glimpses of complete dominance. He is an ideal run-stuffer with excellent tackling ability. My main concern is his weight. I almost see Cody has being too big and his weight could definitely affect his long-term health. His lack of stamina will hurt him too on draft day. His inconsistent motor and lack of pass rushing ability will make him more of a 2 down lineman in the NFL. These two reasons will cause Cody to fall a bit on draft day. However, despite these concerns, I still see a tremendous amount of potential in Terrence Cody and I view him as a 1st round draft pick.
