Scouting Report: Jared Odrick, DT, Penn St.

NFL Draft Analyst

Ht: 6'5 Wt: 304 40: 5.05

Strengths: Great size. Tough, very strong. Has outstanding motor, he never gives up. Is very athletic. Displays great ability to penetrate the line. Plays very physical. Has a good pass rush for DT. Shows great agility; he can often run around linemen (however he sometimes over-runs the play). Shows that he has a tremendous bull rush. Keeps his feet moving when engaged. Uses his hands well, which shows his great strength. He can dis-engaged blockers. Good against the run. He has excellent awareness; can locate the football effectively. Extremely versatile, can play multiple positions in both 4-3 and 3-4 defensive schemes. Has a great 3-technique and 5-technique. Good leader. 2009 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

Weaknesses: He tackles a little high and does not consistently wrap up, he needs improvement. Occasionally struggles verse the double team (he gets too high). Not as quick as some would like; sometimes he cannot get to the runningback before he hits the hole. Average quickness off the football. Not too agile, and can often get juked out in space. He missed the 2007 season with a broken hand and dislocated ankle. Cited for disorderly conduct in February 2009 for fighting.

Summary: Jared Odrick is a lineman with great size and athleticism. He is tough, very strong, and plays with a physical demeanor. I think that Odrick's two biggest strengths are his versatility and his outstanding motor. Odrick is an outstandingly versatile player. He has the ability to play DT in the 4-3 defense, DE in the 3-4 defense and some even believe he has the strength and potential to bulk up and play a nose tackle in the 3-4 defense. He basically could play any position on the defensive line; that's special. His motor is what got him noticed at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. He simply does not give up and gives 100% on every play. Coaches and scout love to see that from a player. Tackling is what caught my eye on film. He needs to improve on consistently using good technique in tackling. He missed too many tackles and he needs to improve in this area. He showed great improvement from his junior to his senior season in this area; which shows that he can improve, but he needs to continue working on it. Overall, Jared Odrick is a player with first round talent and will likely be a top 25 pick this April.
