Strengths:
Great size for an NFL receiver. Very athletic and strong. Quick off the line of scrimmage. Incredibly strong hands. Is able to make catches in traffic, as well as adjust to the football. Very physical and dominant at jump balls. Is able to use to his big body to his advantage. Has long arms and big hands. Has good agility and acceleration, but lacks elite long term speed. He shows good burst of quickness at times; needs to be more consistent. He runs good routes; shows good hip movement and looks very polished. Shows good awareness; comes back when the quarterback is in trouble and can get open to help out his quarterback. He has good vision. I think he is more elusive than people give him credit for. He can do damage after the catch. He is very strong and hard to bring down. He has terrific balance for a player his size.
He is a complete playmaker; able to make game changing plays. Has a large amount of potential and upside. Average blocker; he can definitely improve this area. Can return punts, but will probably not be asked to in the NFL.
Weaknesses:
Does not have elite top end speed. A lot of questions surrounding him. Was suspended for the final 10 games of last season for lying to NCAA. Other questions include his maturity, work ethic and decision-making.
Summary:
Dez Bryant is the top wide out in the 2010 NFL draft; when you watch film on him, he wows you. He is incredibly strong and athletic. He uses his big body to his advantage and he makes big plays. He is a playmaker and looks the part of a big time wide receiver in the NFL. Based on game film alone, he is a top 5 pick. However, there are red flags surrounding him. He was suspended for the majority of last season for lying to NCAA. Some question his maturity, decision-making and others see him as a diva wide receiver. Teams will strongly take these concerns into consideration, and I see them making their decision about Bryant after meeting him during the interviews. From there teams will be able to decide for themselves whether they think Bryants red flags are a real concern or whether his talent is simply too much to pass up on. Overall, I wouldnt be surprised to see him go in the top 10, and I think there is no way in the world he makes it out of the top 15.
