Strengths:  He’s an elite athlete.  Terrific instincts.  Has a very quick reaction time.  Can be a violent hitter and is a solid, reliable tackler.  Tough player.  Shows good strength with room to improve.  Good awareness.  Able to read the play often and fill the hole.  Shows good quickness and often beats the blockers to where the runner is going.  Plays with great speed and acceleration.  Takes appropriate angles.  Has a good motor; plays with relentless effort.  Very aggressive playing style.  Very comfortable and reliable in coverage.  Has very fluid hips and can change direction quickly (former safety).  I think he is good in both man and zone coverages.   Three down linebacker in the NFL.  Is a very good pass rusher.  Defensive playmaker; makes plays all over the field.

Weaknesses:  He is often too aggressive.  Shows a lack of focus and fundamentals.  He over-pursues plays and fills wrong holes because he’s so quick and aggressive.  Needs to learn to pursue under control.  He needs to add bulk to play middle linebacker in the NFL.  Right now, his size is an issue.  Needs to use his hands better to disengage.  Broke his foot in 2011.  Sat out the first four games of this past season because he was suspended for violating team rules.

Summary:  I have been so impressed with Ogletree this past season.  Ogletree proved that he is the leader of a very good Georgia defense.  He is a terrific athlete who plays with amazing speed and acceleration.  He’s also a solid tackler, who can deliver violent hits and has the football I.Q. to read and recognize where the play is going.  The biggest thing for me is his coverage skills though.  He’s no doubt a three down linebacker in the NFL; that’s hard to find.  Based on his film this season, I have a top 15 grade on him.  He’s an instinct LB who plays with speed, range, instincts, and has terrific coverage skills.  Also, since he is relatively new to playing linebacker, I believe he is going to get a lot better.  He’s going to go early in the first round this April.

Draft Projection: Top 15

Feb. 17th Update: Alec Ogletree was recently arrested for DUI, its unknown how much this will effect his stock.
