2009 NFL Mock Draft - 16-32

1-16 I 16-32 I Round 2 I Round 3 I Round 4 I Round 5 I Round 6 I Round 7

17.  New York Jets - Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
New York Jets' Draft Needs
This choice came down to QB Josh Freeman and WR Jeremey Maclin.
The Jets don't seem to be as high on Freeman as they are on Stafford and Sanchez.  Maclin is considered a top 10 player in this draft and could go as high as #7.  The Jets have their new weapon to team up with Jericho Cotchery, now they just need a quarterback to throw the ball.

18.  Denver Broncos (from Chicago) - Evander Hood, DE/DT, Missouri
Denver Broncos' Draft Needs

The Broncos were unable to get Tyson Jackson at #12, so they instead draft hood to be a DE in their new 3-4 defense.  Not a pretty position, but a very difficult position to fill as its hard to find a player athletic enough, but big enough to play the end in a 3-4. A 3-4 DE is one of the hardest jobs in football.  Knowshon Moreno could be a darkhorse at this spot.

19.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas St.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Draft Needs

As much as I have tried to peg Peria Jerry at this spot for the last 2 months, it seems like the Buccaneers are trying very, very hard in getting their future quarterback.  They tried to complete a 3 team trade in which they would have received Jay Cutler.  Buccaneers fans are hoping that last year's draft pick Josh Johnson is the answer, but it would be extremely hard to pass on 6-6 Josh Freeman who has experience playing in a pro style offense.  Some scouts like him more than Sanchez cause of his experience factor and the fact that besides Jordy Nelson, he had minimal NFL talent around him, but still performed well.  The Bucs will probably try to move back as they could probably get Freeman in the early 2nd round and they currently don't have a 2nd round pick after trading it for Kellen Winslow.

20.  Detroit Lions (from Dallas) - Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi
Detroit Lions' Draft Needs
The Lions took the franchise quarterback with the first pick and now they need to protect him with an OT.  The Lions' interest an offensive tackles Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe show that tackle is a priority and if it is not a position they address with their first pick, I expect it to be a position they draft here.  The NFL is a copycat league, so expect the Lions to copy exactly what the Falcons did last season.  Take the QB than the OT and expect a playoff season.  However, Eben Britton is the best tackle left and I see him more of a right tackle.  William Beatty or Phil Loadholt would be a reach, so the Lions feel one of their biggest holes and drafts Jerry.  DE Robert Ayers is another possibility.

21.  Philadelphia Eagles - Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
Philadelphia Eagles' Draft Needs

The Eagles could go after stud TE Brandon Pettigrew, but with Brent Celek's recent success, the Eagles are able to focus on other needs in the first round.  With Chris Wells off the board, the Eagles draft the other expected 1st round running back in Moreno.  Moreno's stock has fallen a little after his 4.6 40.  However, everyone has seen the footage, and what he did in the SEC is no fluke.  The Eagles are looking to keep Brian Westbrook healthy by giving him less of a load.  Moreno could be a great complement to the all everything Westbrook.

22.
Minnesota Vikings - Eben Britton, OT, Arizona
Minnesota Vikings' Draft Needs
I have pegged WR Percy Harvin at this spot for the past few months, but with the recent news that he failed a drug test, I believe the Vikings will past.  Harvin would have been the perfect slot receiver.  Instead the Vikings fix their biggest need: right tackle.  Eben Britton would come in immediately and play the right tackle position.  Current right tackle Ryan Cook is probably best off playing inside.  Versatile offensive lineman Max Unger is a possibility as well.

23.  New England Patriots - Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut
New England Patriots' Draft Needs

The Patriots are one of the hardest teams to judge.  With 3 second round picks, the Patriots are trying to make a package deal to move up into the top 10.  However if they stay put, I see them taking Darius Butler, who it is rumored Bill Belichick really likes.  These are the Pats, they usually never stay still.

24.  Atlanta Falcons - Clay Matthews, OLB, USC

Atlanta Falcons' Draft Needs

With the Falcons trading for Tony Gonzalez, tight end is no longer a need.  Grady Jackson is  gone and the Falcons have very little at the defensive tackle position.  However, the top defensive tackles are off the board, so they help fill another need in OLB.  Matthews is the last of the USC linebacking trio to go.  With Keith Brooking and Michael Boley gone, the Falcons have a major void to fill and only signed the Mike Peterson, who Jacksonville dumped, in the offseason.

25.  Miami Dolphins - Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB, Penn St.
Miami Dolphins' Draft Needs
I believe cornerback is a bigger need, but Maybin is considered a top 10 prospect by many NFL teams.  Maybin drops this far because he is more ranked on potential.  He is young, will take some time to develop, and still needs to bulk up.  Maybin has probably the highest potential of any pass rushers in this draft.

26.  Baltimore Ravens - Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma St.
Baltimore Ravens' Draft Needs

The Ravens first choice would be for Darrius Heyward-Bey, but he is long gone.  The Ravens are one of the best teams year after year in the draft.  They know how to draft talent and prepare for the future. The Ravens signed L.J. Smith this offseason and still have Todd Heap, but they seem to really, really like Pettigrew.  Pettigrew is one of the elite prospects in this draft because he is such a good blocking tight end as well as a receiving one.  Good teams draft value, and this is another instance of it.

27.  Indianapolis Colts - Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State
Indianapolis Colts' Draft Needs
With both defensive tackles off the board, I look for the Colts to do go with value and also address another position of need in wide receiver.  Bill Polian always drafts unconventially.  Most people project Robiskie as a 2nd rounder, but he fits perfectly in the Colts' system.  The Colts prefer smart, route running players that are not so called "divas."  Robiskie, being the son of a NFL wide receiver coach, and being an Academic All-American fits those qualities.  He would join fellow Buckeye Anthony Gonzalez, who was also an Academic All-American.

28.  Buffalo Bills (from PHI/CAR) - Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee

Buffalo Bills' Draft Needs

The Bills have such a need at the tight end position that they could consider Pettigrew at the 11th pick, but instead they get a major "steal" and get him at 28.  If Pettigrew is here, this pick seems to be a no brainer.  If Pettigrew is off the board, look for the Bills to take OLB Clay Matthews.

29.  New York Giants -
Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina
New York Giants' Draft Needs
The Giants have had a great free agency so far by signing Chris Canty, Rocky Bernard, Michael Boley and C.C. Brown.  These signings gives the Giants great flexibility with this pick.  The Giants decide to draft a wide receiver to replace Plaxico Burress.  With an abundant of them available, they go with the sure handed Nicks over Kenny Britt and Percy Harvin.  This pick depends heavily on if the Giants are going to trade for Braylon Edwards.

30.  Tennessee Titans -
Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
Tennessee Titans' Draft Needs

The Titans recent signing of Nate Washington wasn't anything to jump out of your seat about, but it was an improvement to a poor receiving corps.  Justin Gage played well against the Ravens, but he will never be a number one.  The Washington signing gives the Titans to consider other pressing needs.  At cornerback the Titans seem to be set with Pro Bowl Cortland Finnegan, but on the other side the Titans have 34 years old Nick Harper starting.  The Titans draft Harper's eventual replacement in Davis, who falls primarily because of character issues.  The Titans could take a flier on WR Percy Harvin, but I think they pass.

31.  Arizona Cardinals - Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut
Arizona Cardinals' Draft Needs

The Cardinals need a RB to complement their power back Tim Hightower assuming Edjerrin James not with the team.  imagine all the holes Brown should see in the pass happy offense in Arizona.  Brown's stock has been on the rise, and with the Cardinals next pick not until 63, they are better off taking a RB, as they could draft a solid center or outside linebacker.  After Brown, I see a major dropoff in running back talent. Center Alex Mack, DE/OLBs Connor Barwin and Michael Johnson are other possibilities.

32.  Pittsburgh Steelers - Alex Mack, C, California
Pittsburgh Steelers' Draft Needs

The Steelers franchised tackle Max Starks and resigned tackle Willie Colon guard Chris Kemoeatu making OT not as much of a need.  The Steelers have a history of not passing on talent.  Mack would instantly be an upgrade over Justin Hartwig, but also be the starting center for the next 10 years.  He is that good, and my safest player in the draft.  He could play guard as well, but expect him to play center on day 1.  Great teams don't pass on great players.  Also, fellow TFE writer, Gregory Cox, told me he would shave his head if the Steelers passed on Mack.  If the scenario does indeed happen, we promise to post his new headshot on the site.  Cornerbacks Sean Smith and Alphonso Smith are other possibilities.
