NFL Draft Prospect
Interview: Jose Yearwood, S, Brown
by Michael Abromowitz,
4/12/08. Brown is known more for producing top
lawyers and Nobel prize winners than NFL players, but the past two
years have produced two solid NFL prospects. Last year being Zak
DeOssie who won a Super Bowl for the Giants and interviewed with
thefootballexpert.com. This season is Jose Yearwood, a safety
with a combination of size, speed, and brains.
TheFootballExpert.com: What
is your accurate height, weight and
forty time?
Jose
Yearwood: 6’1”, 226lbs, 4.5
TheFootballExpert.com: Describe
your game in three words or
less.
Jose
Yearwood: Consistent, dependable,
prepared.
TheFootballExpert.com: What
do
you feel is your greatest
strength as a football player and what area do you feel you need to
improve in?
Jose
Yearwood: I am a student of the game. I know my assignments
and have a good feel of what I am going to see from my opponent on game
day. At times I lean on my size too much and I don’t get low in my
tackles.
TheFootballExpert.com: What
NFL player do you do you think you
compare favorably to?
Jose
Yearwood: I am similar to Roy Williams in that I play well
close to the line scrimmage and physical at the point of attack, but I
think I am very good in coverage because of my experience playing at
corner.

TheFootballExpert.com: Who
is the best player you have faced
during your college football career?
Jose Yearwood: Clifton Dawson
(Harvard) was a very good runner who is playing in league today, but
the running back from my team Nick Hartigan (’05) was the hardest
person I’ve had to tackle so far.
TheFootballExpert.com: What
is your greatest football moment to
date?
Jose Yearwood: Winning the Ivy league
championship was my greatest moment. We destroyed the last team
we played and that had only been the third time my school had ever won
the conference. That was really special. Individually, when I laid out
the tight end from Penn my Junior year late in the 4th quarter would
rank up there because it was at a critical point in the game.
TheFootballExpert.com: Did
you have a favorite pro team growing
up? Favorite player?
Jose Yearwood: I am a huge
Cowboys fan. Emmit Smith was my favorite because I played running back,
but when I started playing safety I really started to like Darren
Woodson.

TheFootballExpert.com: How
instrumental was Head Coach Phil Estes in your
progression?
Jose
Yearwood: My high school head coach Bill
Vonada helped me immensely. He was Christian man and he really worked
hard to be a good coach which inspired me to work harder to be the best
player I could be. My college coach Phil Estes is a real fiery guy who
got me excited to play the game. My positions coach Abbott Burrell
helped me to progress as a DB and helped me learn to play two positions
at a high level.
TheFootballExpert.com: What
have former college teammates now
in the NFL told you about preparing for the league?
Jose
Yearwood: I only know of one, Zak DeOssie, and
he said you have to be willing to work harder than ever to perfect your
craft. That means a lot coming from him since he was an extremely hard
worker while here at Brown.
TheFootballExpert.com: When
you get your first professional
paycheck what is the first thing you will buy?
Jose
Yearwood: Nothing, I am putting that money in the bank. I’m
not real flashy, so only something I need.
TheFootballExpert.com: How
will you be preparing for the NFL
Draft?
Jose
Yearwood: I am going to continue to do the workout I did to
prepare for my pro day, but also I will concentrate on field drills.
This will be the first in like 8 years that I am not playing spring
football so I don’t want to get rusty.
TheFootballExpert.com: Do
you have any goals in mind when it comes to the NFL
Draft?
Jose
Yearwood: I just want the opportunity to play
in the NFL. I don’t care where I go. I just want someone to give me the
chance and I know they won’t regret it.
TheFootballExpert.com: What
is the one thing you will most miss at college?
Jose
Yearwood: I am going to miss my
teammates/friends and everyone being on a similar schedule. In the real
world everyone is doing their own thing so it can be difficult seeing
people.
TheFootballExpert.com: Where
is the best place to get a bite to
eat in Providence?
Jose
Yearwood: Joe’s American
Bar and Grille, great foot. Capital Grille is nice too.
TheFootballExpert.com: What
was your favorite college course
and why?
Jose
Yearwood: I like Corporate Finance because of
my Professor and its relevance to the real world. I also enjoyed my
Roman History II course, very interesting.
TheFootballExpert.com: Any
pregame rituals? Food?
Music?
Jose
Yearwood: I like to get the stadium early, I like to go on
the field and throw the ball around with a teammate. I don’t eat much
before a game and as for music I got to listen some southern hip hop
like TI, Ludacris, Pastor Troy, etc.
TheFootballExpert.com: What
is
something football fans may not
know about you?
Jose
Yearwood: I love
history, all the extracurricular reading I do is historical.
TheFootballExpert.com: Do
you
read mock drafts or listen to
what draft experts have to say?
Jose
Yearwood: I’ve looked at some drafts sites to
see what there saying about me.
TheFootballExpert.com: Definitely
just to see what they think about certain players. I think they work
hard but at times don’t really know what they’re talking about. Also
the word “intangibles” is thrown around a bit much.
Jose
Yearwood: I am Legend was a great movie and very believable.
TheFootballExpert.com: What
do
you plan to do once your playing
career is over?
Jose
Yearwood: I would like to either work on Wall
Street because of the competitive atmosphere or settle down and coach
high school football. It kind of depends on how old I am when that is
the case. Broadcasting would be of interest to me as well.
TheFootballExpert.com: Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions
and good luck!
Jose
Yearwood: Thanks.
