NFL Draft Prospect Interview: JoLonn Dunbar, LB, Boston College
by Paul Eide, 4/1/08. Is there a quantifiable reference point for what it takes to be a “playmaker’? Does it boil down to the amount of tackles made? Does it come down to touchdowns scored? No matter what the quantifiable aspect, Jolonn Dunbar is a playmaker plain and simple. Four touchdowns on four different forced turnovers throughout his career should not only catch the attention of NFL scouts, but make him a verifiable draft pick.

Dunbar is the perfect example of a player whose measurables are not indicative of his value to a prospective NFL team. Need consistent proof? How about back to back seasons of 90+ tackles and a defensive score in each of the last three? And on top of that, a great personality and an enjoyable interviewee.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Are you glad the Draft is almost here?

Jolonn Dunbar:  I am man. Its like a dead period, doing nothing trying to figure out whether you’re coming or going- it’s crazy. Just waiting for about another 30 days, working out, trying to stay as sane as possible.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Have any teams called your agent yet?

Jolonn Dunbar:  We’ve had teams call, write letters, but you never know. They are just telling you what they want to tell you.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Is it surreal?

Jolonn Dunbar:  It is. Its so hard to do. Every year since I was five years old. I always knew what I was going to do next year, whether it was BC or high school. And now you’re just sitting in the dead zone- “am I even going to play football? This team, that team.” Its all fun to think about because it’s a dream come true but the anxiety can drive you crazy

TheFootballExpert.com:  What’s it like to be that scrutinized from the time the season ends until now?

Jolonn Dunbar: Everything they do is about scrutiny. To point out any negative traits about character, tape athletic ability; they’re trying to find a negative. Which is cool because that’s what they get paid to do. But they’re just trying to point out, ‘not big enough, strong enough fast enough, but it is what it is.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What’s the strangest question you’ve been asked by a potential employer?

Jolonn Dunbar: Have I ever killed someone? Like what? Are you serious? Yeah, a couple nights ago. I mean come in! Right before I got on the plane it was perfect, you shoulda been there. No I’ve never killed anyone, are you serious!

TheFootballExpert.com:  During the interview process at the Combine how many interviews did you have to do?

Jolonn Dunbar:  There are two different kinds of interviews; formal and informal. I had couple formal interviews where you go into the team room and you’re meeting the GM, head coach, sometimes the owners, OC’s, DC’s. Then in the informal’s you’re meeting like a LB coach just going over defensive players, schemes, etc. The informal ones are in a big auditorium, where there are lots of players and people around but the formal one is in a team room.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Was there a time when you went t to a meeting and you thought, “Wow that’s ___!”

Jolonn Dunbar:  It was when I sat down with the Panthers and I was like, “Wow this is cool to be in here with John Fox and his staff.” They picked up Beason and had Morgan at LB and to think they have Steve Smith I was like, “Wow!” Im a fan of the game I love the game, I love the players, I’m still 12 years old in that regard.

TheFootballExpert.com:  How did you feel going up against the big name LB’s at the Combine?

Jolonn Dunbar:  That’s what the Combine is; comparing yourself to another guy. You’re like, “you’re not that big, you’re not that strong.” That’s just how it is. Its human nature and the competition. They were all nice guys and were all in this together

TheFootballExpert.com:  Was there a big degree of separation between you and say, Dan Conner?

Jolonn Dunbar:  That’s not for me to say. Ill let the scouts decide.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Did the scouts say whether they would see you as an inside or outside linebacker?

Jolonn Dunbar:  “I heard a little of both. Its one of those things where you’re just not sure. Whatever is necessary. I’m a football player and I can do whatever.

TheFootballExpert.com:  You’re an impact player which is something you can’t gauge by measurements. Do you think they put too little sock into game film?

Jolonn Dunbar:  I do. I think your tape tells you everything you need to know as far as the kind of player you are. If you’re good for 4-5 years, why wouldn’t you continue to be good and be better at the next level? But it’s the law of the land and I’m okay with it.

TheFootballExpert.com:  It seemed like every time you forced a turnover in college you scored a TD? Why?

Jolonn Dunbar:  I like being in the end zone. As a high school running back I scored 20 TDs my senior year so I like how it feels. Every time I get a turnover I feel like I need to pay homage to my old stomping grounds.

TheFootballExpert.com:  How good did the 94 yard touchdown feel?

Jolonn Dunbar:  Besides the fact I felt like I was going to die, great! I can remember it vividly. I pick up the ball and I’m running and some fast guy is chasing me. One of my safeties took him out, I’m trying to breath, it was funny and we all laugh about it to this day.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Is being converted from RB to LB seen as a strength w/the scouts?

Jolonn Dunbar:  They all ask me about it. They ask if I think it helped as a LB and I think it has several times over. It’s almost the same type of position- reading and reacting off of blocks.

TheFootballExpert.com:  With Matt Ryan projected as a top 5 pick, did that help you in terms of recognition?

Jolonn Dunbar:  That always helps, plus our team winning this year. When you do that and become nationally known, people take notice. I think us playing well as a team opened a lot of eyes and it was so much fun.

TheFootballExpert.com:  If you had to pick a current or former NFL player to compare your game to, who would it be?

Jolonn Dunbar:  Two guys; Ray Lewis and Lofa Tatupa. Talent wise I’m more like Lofa, but I play with the passion of Ray.
