Interview with Marvin Jones, WR, California
by Clint Clearwater
NFL Draft Director and Senior Writer
February 12, 2012
TFE: What is your accurate height, weight and 40 time?
Jones: 6’2 200 4.4
TFE: Describe your game in three words or less.
Jones: Explosiveness, concentration, and speed
TFE: What do you feel is your greatest strength as a football player and what area do you feel you need to improve in?
Jones: My greatest strength is my explosiveness when going up to get the ball no matter who is covering me. I need to get better at my breaks with the defender, not letting the defenders interpret my moves.
TFE: Who is one of the best players you have faced during your college football career?
Jones: Alterraun Verner, CB, Tennessee Titans (He played for UCLA).
TFE: What is your greatest football moment to date?
Jones: When we played UCLA my sophomore year, and I caught 2 TDs in the first half.
TFE: Did you have a favorite pro team growing up?
Jones: I didn’t really have one, I was mainly into players. I was a running back when I am younger so I like Marshall Faulk a lot. I did like the Rams for a little bit.
TFE: How instrumental was your Coaches in your progression?
Jones: Coach Tedford was very instrumental. I was kind of thrown into the fire my freshman year; getting playing time, but he was always there for me. Eric Kiesau taught me to be better off press coverage, and taught me a good variety of moves to beat press coverage.
TFE: What have former college teammates now in the NFL told you about preparing for the league?
Jones: They have told me to keep doing what I am doing, which is being consistent. Stay humble. It’s a business, you need to keep working, even through the off season, do the extra stuff.
TFE: What was the most important thing you feel like you learned from your experience at the Senior Bowl?
Jones: I think the tempo of the coaches and team. Really how fast paced everything is at the next level; it’s faster and harder. At practice, you go all out and it’s all about the details.
TFE: After a strong Senior Week and game, what do you want coaches/scouts to see in you at the combine that will help your stock continue to rise?
Jones: I’m a vertical guy. I think my 40 time will turn some heads.
TFE: Do you have any goals in mind when it comes to the NFL Draft?
Jones: To be drafted in that top tier.
TFE: What is the one thing you will most miss at college?
Jones: My teammates, we were like brothers, it’s something you can hold on to forever.
TFE: When you get your first professional paycheck what is the first thing you will buy?
Jones: A car suitable for me and my family.
TFE: Any pregame rituals? Food? Music?
Jones: I did 100 push ups the night before every game.
TFE: Do you read mock drafts or listen to what draft experts have to say?
Jones: I try no too, but at some point you have to.
TFE: Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions and good luck!
