Most of us would like to see a dramatic March Madness style college football tournament right? New Year’s is right around the corner so let’s dream a little bit. This is not a feasible scenario by any stretch of the imagination. Instead it is intended to imagine what a crazy December Delirium tournament might look like. I formed a 64 team bracket using basically the BCS formula. For the top 25 teams I seeded according to strict BCS rankings meaning a #1 seed is equal to a 1-4 ranking, etc. Beyond that I used two human ranking sources 1-120 and the computer average.
The humans count two-thirds just like in the BCS. I tried to keep teams in “home” regions whenever possible which sometimes proved impossible. I did not pay any attention to making one bracket “strong” because I held firm to the seeding. In other words I never dropped or raised a team seeding to avoid conflicts. I also acted like the college tournament by avoiding rematch possibilities in the first two rounds, even if the teams were in different conferences. Finally, teams do not need a winning record to get in and although I did not specifically give every conference a bid it still worked out that way – even Notre Dame found their way in.
The results were interesting. The much beaten down ACC qualified 92% with only Duke left out. The Big East and SEC earned bids for 75% of their teams. The Big Ten (73%) and Pac-10 (60%) were next. Surprisingly the Big XII (58%) was lower than most would expect. Then the non-BCS or newly coined “AQ” conferences start to check in. The MWC (44%) Conference USA (33%) and MAC (31%) all received four entries. The WAC (22%) had two and the Sun Belt (13%) one. The six teams left in the cold on selection day were Auburn, Colorado, Fresno State, Colorado State, Arizona State and Hawaii.
Have fun on the threads. Talk some trash. Explain why your team makes a run, and why the teams I have winning will lose.
