NFL Draft Prospect Interview: Derrick Jones, DE, Grand Valley St.
by Michael Abromowitz, 3/3/07.  It is about time, but it seems that NFL teams are starting to recognize the talented prospects in non-division 1A football.  One place to look for this talent, is the Division II powerhouse, Grand Valley State.  GVS won another national title, and its sack machine, defensive end, Derrick Jones is a major reason why.  Jones led the team with 9.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss.  NFL scouts are already salivating over Jones' 4.7 speed. 


TheFootballExpert.com:  What is your accurate height, weight and forty time?

Derrick Jones: 6’3 7/8, 282, 4.7

TheFootballExpert.com:  What position do you expect to play in the NFL?

Derrick Jones: Defensive End, Outside Linebacker

TheFootballExpert.com:  What do you feel is your greatest strength as a football player and what area do you feel you need to improve in?

Derrick Jones:   I am a complete player.  I’m great at stopping the run and rushing the passer.  I feel that I could work more on my technique.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What NFL player do you do you think you compare favorably to? 

Derrick Jones:  Reggie White. I get to the quarterback with more power than speed.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Who is the best player you have faced during your career?

Derrick Jones:   Brandon Barnes, Allen Barbe

TheFootballExpert.com:  What is your greatest football moment to date?

Derrick Jones:   Winning the National Championship for the 2nd time.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Did you have a favorite pro team growing up?  Favorite player?

Derrick Jones:   I really never had a favorite team.  Growing up I was a Huge Jason Taylor fan

TheFootballExpert.com:  What do you plan to do once your playing career is over?

Derrick Jones:   My plans is to teach Physical Education and coach football at the High school level.

TheFootballExpert.com:  When you get your first professional paycheck what is the first thing you will buy?

Derrick Jones:  Not really sure.   Most likely it will go in the bank.

TheFootballExpert.com:  How have you been preparing and training since the end of your college season?

Derrick Jones:  I been training in Chicago for 2 months working on my speed and quickness.  Also getting in shape as well.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Obviously it is still early, but do you have any goals in mind when it comes to the NFL Draft?

Derrick Jones:  I would like to get drafted.  However if it doesn’t happen I will never stop fighting from making a team.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What is the one thing you will most miss at college?

Derrick Jones:  The chemistry and personal bounds I had with some of my teammates.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What are your plans to help you get notice?  Combines?  All-Star games?

Derrick Jones:  I played in The Texas Vs. Nation game.  I had a good week of practice.  Also I have my pro day coming up on March 12 at Grand Valley.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What have former college teammates now in the NFL told you about preparing for the league?

Derrick Jones:  I have only 1 teammate that’s in the NFL that I never really talk to.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Any pregame rituals?  Food?  Music?

Derrick Jones:  I always have a protein shake before the game, and I listen to r and b to get me focus before games.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Do you read mock drafts or what draft experts have to say?

Derrick Jones:  No I don’t read the internet about mock picks.
