NFL Draft Prospect Interview: Derrek Richards, WR, Utah
by Michael Abromowitz, 4/11/08Derrek Richards finished his career at Utah with 136 receptions, 1,644 receiving yards, 13 touchdowns, and this past season led the Moutain West Conference and ninth in the nation in punt return average (15.0).  Not to shabby for a former walk on.  Richards now looks to take his speed to the NFL.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What is your accurate height, weight and forty time?

Derrek Richards:  5’10 5/8”, 182 lbs,  4.39

TheFootballExpert.com:  Describe your game in three words or less.

Derrek Richards:  Deep threat.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What do you feel is your greatest strength as a football player and what area do you feel you need to improve in?

Derrek Richards:  I would say my greatest strength is my speed and quickness.  Need to improve on catching everything thrown to me.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What NFL player do you do you think you compare favorably to? 

Derrek Richards:  Kevin Curtis

TheFootballExpert.com:  Who is the best player you have faced during your college football career?

Derrek Richards:  Eric Wright, CB, UNLVA\

TheFootballExpert.com:  What is your greatest football moment to date?

Derrek Richards:  I would have to say beating BYU in overtime my sophomore year.  All odds were against us.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Did you have a favorite pro team growing up?  Favorite player?

Derrek Richards:  Dallas Cowboys.  Emmitt Smith.


TheFootballExpert.com:  How instrumental was Head Coach Kyle Whittingham in your progression?

Derrek Richards:  He is a defensive minded coach and spent most of his time with the defense.  My position coach (Aaron Roderick) has a lot to do with my success as a football player.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What have former college teammates now in the NFL told you about preparing for the league? 

Derrek Richards:  It’s a mental and physical grind.  Every man is for themselves and your going to have to earn everything you get.  Nothing is given to you in the NFL.  I had the opportunity to work out with some current NFL players these last couple of months, and they said when you get your opportunity to perform at anytime, make sure you bring it because nothing is guaranteed in the NFL

TheFootballExpert.com:  When you get your first professional paycheck what is the first thing you will buy?

Derrek Richards:  I would definitely put it towards a house.  Can’t wait to move out of my apartment

TheFootballExpert.com:  How will you be preparing for the NFL Draft?

Derrek Richards:  Work heavily on my conditioning and continue to get faster and stronger for rookie camp.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Do you have any goals in mind when it comes to the NFL Draft?

Derrek Richards:  I would like to get picked up in the later rounds and start right away in camp.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What is the one thing you will most miss at college?

Derrek Richards:  My teammates for sure, and the friendships that I made over my course of college

TheFootballExpert.com:  Where is the best place to get a bite to eat in Salt Lake City?

Derrek Richards:  The Pie.  Best pizza joint anywhere..

TheFootballExpert.com:  What was your favorite college course and why?

Derrek Richards:  Rock & Roll History.  There is a bunch of fascinating people that I learned about.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Any pregame rituals?  Food?  Music?

Derrek Richards:  A Rockstar and some Def Leppard

TheFootballExpert.com:  What is something football fans may not know about you?

Derrek Richards:  My wife says I’m a pretty good dad.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Do you read mock drafts or listen to what draft experts have to say?

Derrek Richards:  I’ve looked at some drafts sites to see what there saying about me.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What was the last good movie you saw?

Derrek Richards:   I Am Legend.  Love Will Smith.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What do you plan to do once your playing career is over?

Derrek Richards:  Enjoy being a dad, watch my kids grow up, and can’t wait until they are playing sports of their own.
