2010 NFL Mock Draft - Going Forward: Rounds 2 & 3

Senior Writer

Now that the first round is completed, I've put together a mock draft for rounds 2 and 3. Thoughts are always welcomed at greg@thefootballexpert.com.

Round 2 | Round 3
33. (2.1) STL: Brian Price, DT, UCLA
First of all they probably move out of this pick. After the Carriker trade this presents value at a position of need, so I'm leaving him here from my final mock.
34. (2.2) MIN (from DET): Taylor Mays, S, USC
Offensive line is still in play, with my first round pick for them in my final version (USC's Charles Brown) plus Saffold available. However, Mays is a guy I see succeeding on a defense with a potent pass rush. He will start to make some of those plays he failed to make in college when Allen is forcing opposing quarterbacks out of the pocket.
35. (2.3) TB: Everson Griffen, DE, USC
After trading the late Gaines Adams the Bucs will be looking to add a pass rusher. Griffen is a first round value.
36. (2.4) KC: Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas
Lucky them. Kindle falls out of the first round with an injury concern. Maybe he keeps falling, but they want an attacking linebacker.
37. (2.5) PHI (from WAS): Charles Brown, OT, USC
I had a pass rusher (Dunlap) here but they addressed it in round 1 with Graham. They benefit from the somewhat surprising fall of Brown who could have gone in the 20's.
38. (2.6) CLE: Colt McCoy, QB, Texas
Boy, if they want McCoy more power to them. I can't envision this guy surviving a month in the frigid, rugged AFC North.
39. (2.7) OAK: Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland
What? They get the guy in round two they thought they would get in the first round? Could this be a genius move by the Raiders? Probably just blind luck. Even if they do surprise with Iupati, Al Davis might have him in mind as a dominant guard and nothing more. This is a potential left tackle and I'm staying with the pick from my final mock.
40. (2.8) MIA (from SEA/SD): Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama
Generally 'Tuna' likes his nose tackles later on, but after trading for Marshall this team is pretty close to contending right now. Cody has weight issues and is a two down player. So what? He eats up space and fills their desperate need at the nose.
41. (2.9) BUF: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
Missing out on Tebow forces their hand to do whatever is required to trade up for Clausen. This makes the most sense of the teams in day two's top 10.
42. (2.10) TB (from CHI): Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
The Bucs have traded for Reggie Brown (Eagles) which helps offset the loss of Antonio Bryant. Someone needs to develop a chemistry with Josh Freeman and Tate could be that guy so I'm keeping this as the pick but shifting it down.
43. (2.11) BAL (from MIA/DEN): Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern
The Ravens have solved their short term needs at wide receiver by retaining the guy who always leads their stat sheet (Mason) taking a shot at a reclamation project (Stallworth) and trading for a potential #1 (Boldin). They still need to help the depleted cornerback position, but need to solidify their defensive line where free agency and age have left them short handed.
44. (2.12) NE (from JAX): Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida
They have a history of going after tight end early and really need one in this draft. After chatting with Abromowitz on the eve of the draft, and also realizing he was in for a visit I'm going with him over Gronkowski. I'm standing by this.
45. (2.13) DEN: Daryl Washington, LB, TCU
Now that they have replaced the Pro Bowl connection of Cutler to Marshall (effectively) with Tebow to Thomas their offense is set. Insert laughter here. It's their funeral there, but for me a value pick at linebacker makes sense here.
46. (2.14) NYG: Sean Lee, ILB, Penn State
The groans were audible whtn the Raiders took McClain. There is never very much love for inside linebackers during the draft, but the Giants have to find someone to take over for Pierce. This is a good option.
47. (2.15) NE (from TEN): Linval Joseph, DT, East Carolina
Flat out the Patriots need to get back to loading up on defensive linemen. That's all there is to it. I'm not saying it was a bad move adding an impact corner (McCourty) but it starts up front.
48. (2.16) CAR: Lamarr Houston, DT, Texas
Trying to project picks for a short stacked team is always tough. The turnover on the interior of their defensive line is alarming though, so this is the final call. They might be in the mix for Clausen now that they would only be moving up 10-15 picks, but I doubt it.
49. (2.17) SF: Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest
This is where I had them taking a guard (Jerry) but they did it already with Iupati. Now it has to be the cornerback they need.
50. (2.18) KC (from ATL): Nate Allen, FS, South Florida
After doing nothing to upgrade their safety position it seems like Tennessee's Eric Berry will be on their mind at #5. Pioli's much talked about 'positional value' mindset dictates this is the strategy instead.
51. (2.19) HOU: Ben Tate, RB, Auburn
Another pick I missed the round on because I had corner here, and instead they went that way in round 1. Now it has to be a running back and while it might be surprising Tate is an excellent alternative to missing on Mathews.
52. (2.20) PIT: Roger Saffold, OT, Indiana
Most had him landing in Indy at #30, but I'm sticking by my final decision to put him here. Needs on the defensive line and at cornerback might be placed on the back burner with the prospect of Big Ben missing time for a league suspension. Even if it is just for a game or two, their offensive line needs to be fortified if Dixon is going to win his start(s) and keep this team in playoff contention. It is possible Saffold is long gone, but I get a feeling a few of the tackles might linger a little bit. He visited the Steelers.
53. (2.21) NE: Arrelius Benn, WR, Illinois
They have watched Holmes (Jets) and Marshall (Dolphins) get traded to division rivals. Now it is their turn to upgrade their receiving corps where Moss is about to turn to dust and Welker is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season. Benn would have been a first round pick in a better college offense.
54. (2.22) CIN: Mardy Gilyard, WR, Cincinnati
Most of the players they select are off their visit list. Obviously he is local, but it makes a lot of sense. They need a long term deep threat after a lot of moves at the receiver position adding up to not enough production.
55. (2.23) PHI: Dexter McCluster, WR, Mississippi
Can the Eagles really let an explosive, shift playmaker escape their grasp? All he does is make plays and realistically DeSean Jackson should not be returning too many punts. He creates headaches for the opposing coordinator because he must be accounted for.
56. (2.24) GB: Jerome Murphy, CB, South Florida
Many people think the Packers are going offensive tackle then cornerback and it makes a lot of sense. Too much sense to actually turn out that way, but age in both areas dictates this is the way they should go. Harris and Woodson can't go on forever.
57. (2.25) BAL: Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona
Heap is no longer reliable for a full season and the Ravens need to find another receiving threat. They love taking chances on injured players.
58. (2.26) ARI: Donald Butler, ILB, Washington
The loss of Karlos Dansby depletes them at the linebacker position and Butler is a late riser.
59. (2.27) DAL: Vladimir Ducasse, OG, Massachusetts
The age of their starting guards dictates the need for some depth and a future starter. Their roster is talented enough for them to make a move like this and keep the offensive line strong.
60. (2.28) SEA (from SD): Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford
Admittedly I'm having a little fun here because the Seahawks need a running back and already have one Bay Area guy (Cal's Forsett) so why not another? It is not all that crazy considering Carroll knows the Pac-10 and watched him run wild last year.
61. (2.29) NYJ: Morgan Burnett, FS, Georgia Tech
Kerry Rhodes is off to the desert and their safety position is up in the air a bit as a result.
62. (2.30) MIN: Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida
Do they need another pass rusher? Clearly no, but with Dunlap falling down the board this gives them the flexibility to not be a hostage to the salary demands of Ray Edwards.
63. (2.31) IND: Jared Veldheer, OT, Hillsdale
Are the Colts serious about getting bigger on the offensive line? This might be a bit extreme, but they need to find a left tackle. It's unlikely they are finding one here, or anywhere in thei draft but they have to try.
64. (2.32) NO: Koa Misi, OLB, Utah
Fujita's loss hurts them at linebacker and while it was probably wishful thinking for me to expect Weatherspoon to fall as far as #32 now they fill the hole.
