2007 NFL Mock Draft, Version 2.0
by Jared Donnelly, 2/20/07

Abromowitz's Draft Donnelly's Draft
Bures' Draft Dietzler's Draft
Krow's Draft

The calendar has hit February and the Pro-Bowl is (mercifully) over, players are looking to be franchise tagged and some players are itching to get out of dodge. Teams are jockeying for position in the free agent market but the most important part of the offseason is always the NFL Draft. Here is the first round:

1. Oakland Raiders- JaMarcus Russell. QB. LSU.

Calvin Johnson’s recent forty time of 4.33 at a simulated combine at a speed camp is very tempting. Al Davis realizes though that if Aaron Brooks is still under center, you could lineup Superman and Captain America and still go 3-13 every year.

2. Detroit Lions- Jamaal Anderson. DE. Arkansas.

Surprise number one. The Lions feel okay about Kevin Jones and can live with a very underrated Kitna for a year. The Lions are one or two pieces away on defense from being a good unit on that side of the ball. Anderson next to Shaun Rogers? Check please.

3/4. Cleveland Browns- Joe Thomas. OT. Wisconsin.

Dream scenario for the Browns here. Peterson is tempting as is entertaining offers from other teams who target Peterson. If you have ever watched a Browns game and seen Charlie Frye running for his life, and Rueben Droughns slamming into his own lineman that were pushed back by the opposing front seven, you understand this pick.

3/4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Calvin Johnson. WR. Georgia Tech.

Big. Fast. Strong. And reportedly has advanced route running ability. In any other year, he would easily go number one but with these other awful teams previously, infamously, invested a lot of money and or top picks in receivers in the past, I just don’t see that happening. Galloway is aging, and nobody else is a presence.

5. Arizona Cardinals- Levi Brown. OT. Penn State.

It won’t matter if he plays guard, tackle, or what, as long as he is on their line. They spent a lot of money on Edgerrin James but with no offensive line, he was underproductive. Plus, keeping Leinart upright has to be a priority.

6. Washington Redskins- Alan Branch. DT. Michigan.

This team is a mess. They need to do something about their pass rush and due to the somewhat surprising rise of Anderson, Branch is the best DL available.  No matter what they do here, the ‘skins can’t really mess this one up. Although, they are the Redskins.

7. Minnesota Vikings- Gaines Adams. DE. Clemson.

Udeze has been a major disappointment and with their offense seemingly set on the line, there is no reason not to take another DL. Could pull the trigger on Quinn, but give Tarvaris Jackson a chance. Ginn is popular here as well, but in that division, defense reigns supreme, especially with the Lions setting the tone early.

8. Houston Texans- Adrian Peterson. RB. Oklahoma.

Houston simply has to make this pick. Even if Davis does make a decent return in terms of his health, Peterson will be a fantastic player for years to come. Quinn gets a look here as well but if they can trade Carr, Plummer will follow and Kubiak led Jake the Snake to a career year. Can you spell stop gap?

9. Miami Dolphins- Ted Ginn Jr. Wr. Sprinter. Athlete. KR. DB? Ohio State.

Brady Quinn’s day just got a lot worse. Miami not only gives Culpepper a chance to come back healthy, but they also give him what could possibly be the Randy Moss of the 2000’s. Quinn is so tempting here, as is hearing other offers from teams but Ginn’s potential is just too much to pass up.

10. Atlanta Falcons- Dwayne Bowe. WR. LSU.

Roddy White can’t catch, Brian Finneran is just okay, and you can’t throw to Crumpler every time. Bowe is on the rise and Jarrett is falling, due in some part to the way that USC receivers don’t use their size effectively (see Mike Williams). Bowe is a top five player in this draft in my opinion so at ten, he is a major steal.

11. San Francisco 49ers- Leon Hall. CB. Michigan.

Some teams are afraid that maybe Hall doesn’t have top speed. The 49ers don’t care though since they need a defensive playmaker. WR is also clearly an option here, but building all offense and no defense makes Mike Nolan a dull boy. With the departure of Norv Turner, the team does not feel obligated to go offense.

12. Buffalo Bills- Darrelle Revis. CB. Pitt.

Nate Clements appears to be too expensive for the Bills to keep and Revis would fill that need. Bills need some o-line help for JP Losman and Willis McGahee but in a division with Tom Brady and a potentially healthy Daunte Culpepper, they need to use another first rounder on defense after reaching for Whitner and McCargo last season.

13. St. Louis Rams- LaRon Landry. DB. LSU.
Rams continue to need some help all over this side of the ball. LB is tempting but Landry being available at this point is a huge value. A true safety, he has good cover skills

14. Carolina Panthers- Brady Quinn. QB. Notre Dame.

A great situation for the golden domer. He can sit a season or two behind Delhomme or maybe even compete for a starting job by midseason if Jake doesn’t find his stroke again. The Panthers will go into this next season with a top 10 roster, so this pick is almost a luxury. Almost. Could go with Reggie Nelson or one of the linebackers, but Quinn is too good too pass on.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers- Reggie Nelson. DB. Florida.

Word is new coach Mike Tomlin wants to move from the 3-4 to the 4-3 in a year or two so the need to take a linebacker/defensive end is not so severe as it once was perceived to be. Nelson and TP give the Steelers one of the best, youngest, and fastest safety duos on the league when they line up on week one. Word is that Nelson could also play some corner, although he is not looked at as the answer to anyone’s corner problems.

16. Green Bay Packers- Marshawn Lynch. RB. Cal.

Possibly the biggest perceived lock in the round. Green is not getting younger and Lynch has homerun speed. Catches well also and is not a bad blocker which is a good thing since the Packers line is…well…awful. Could look at Blalock here as well.

17. Jacksonville Jaguars- Adam Carriker. DE. Nebraska.

Jags need some pass rushers badly and Carriker has good speed and can likely contribute immediately. Moss gets a look here as well but the Jags go with a more gritty performer in Carricker. Could even climb a little higher after the combine.

18. Cincinnati Bengals- Paul Posluszny. LB. Penn State.

Workouts should prove that his leg is healthy again and the Bengals need some LB help. A clean character guy, PP would go a long way in aiding that awful pass defense as well as suring up the front seven. Will benefit from Sam Adams and his girth.

19. Tennessee Titans- Dwayne Jarrett. WR. USC.

VY gets his target to go downfield with. I’m not sold on Jarret for reasons stated above, but other than the offensive line prospects, this seems to be the best pick.

20. New York Giants- Lawrence Timmons. LB. Florida State.

After releasing Mr. Nickels, the Giants linebacking core is worse off than it was, and that’s saying something. Could look at a back here but it seems too early for Bush or Pittman. Meachem (Tenn.) and Sidney Rice (South Carolina) could get looks here as well, but I think that a guy like Darius Walker (ND) fits better and will be available in rounds 2-4.

21. Denver Broncos- Jarvis Moss. DE. LB. Florida.

Broncos need a more consistent presence up front than Cleveland castaways. Moss has good speed and could prove to be a huge steal this low in the round. His versatility will allow a nice rotation with Courtney Brown as one of those up/down pass rushers that are becoming more and more prominent in the NFL.

22. Dallas Cowboys- Justin Blalock. OG. Texas.

Anyone that watched Bledsoe stare at the rush, and Romo try to run away from it knows that this is a need. Could go with Griffin (Texas) but need more protection for Romo, Barber, and Jones.

23. Kansas City Chiefs- Quentin Moses. DE. Georgia.

Tamba Hali was a solid pick last season and with young bookends, Herm Edwards has a nice DE tandem for years to come.

24. New England Patriots- Patrick Willis. LB. Ole Miss.

It’s not exactly a secret that the linebackers in New England are aging (at best). Willis will provide good speed and benefit from a very good, and very large, defensive line. Griffin gets a look here with Harrison aging, but LB seems a more pressing need in a 3-4 scheme.

25. New York Jets- Charles Johnson. DE. Georgia.

Jets need to do something since it is evident that Von Olehoffen is not the answer. This is somewhat of a surprise that he falls this low, but with runs on BD’s and DE’s earlier, Johnson slips a little and the Jets are thrilled about it.

26. Philadelphia Eagles- Amobi Okoye. DT. Louisville.

Lack of true DT girth causes the slide. Paired with last year’s selection of Bunkley, some pressure will be taken off of the need at the ends. WR is also a possibility here, but I think that Stallworth resigns.

27. New Orleans Saints- Tank Tyler. DT. NC State.

With free agents on the line, the Saints get some insurance. As if his name didn’t give it away, Tank is an enormous man with shocking athleticism for his size to go with outstanding strength. He could well go higher than this but the Saints are glad that he doesn’t. The Saints will look to go DB in round two to get Fred Thomas some relief after a brutal postseason.

28. New England Patriots- Michael Griffin. S. Texas.

Griffin is sort of a wildcard in this draft. After workouts, he could easily work his way into the top 18-24 picks if not higher. He will replace Harrison in time and the Pats get it right again in April. This team just drafts well. Huge value here.

29. Baltimore Ravens- Buster Davis. LB. Florida State.

Free agency is scary for the Ravens and they could use some assistance in this area as well anyways. Good speed but a lack of size would scare most teams, but the Ravens make up for that with their other members of the front seven.

30. San Diego Chargers- Sidney Rice. WR. South Carolina.

They have to get Rivers and LT another weapon and since McCardell is  not getting younger, or faster, they go with youth and speed in Rice. Someone told me that rice was a good meal if you were hungry and wanted to eat a thousand of something. Rice is also a good option if you’re hungry and want someone to gain one thousand of something.

31. Chicago Bears- Greg Olsen. TE. Miami.

Desmond Clarke is a nice TE but nice doesn’t win Super Bowls. Olsen is a big fast pass catcher that isn’t afraid of the grass between the hashes. Gives Rex a safety valve that I think we can all agree that he needs.

32. Indianapolis Colts- Jon Beason. LB. Miami.

Colts defense was completely atrocious until the calendar hit the middle of January. Cato June is all but a lock to elsewhere so this pick makes sense. Plus, having some Miami Moxy on defense is never a bad thing.
